FAST TRACKING

The Fast Track Teaching Programme is a professional development programme that provides teachers with the skills and knowledge to become leaders in education. It is comparable with other such programmes in terms of challenge, opportunity and reward.

Fast Track seeks to identify people with the potential and desire to become leaders in schools and the wider education community, and then provide them with the opportunities and infrastructure in which to develop and achieve those goals.

To join Fast Track before training to become a teacher, candidates need or will be expecting:

Degree

  • A 2:1 degree, or
  • A 2:2 plus postgraduate degree, e.g. MA, MSc, PhD etc in a relevant subject
  • If teaching secondary, needs to relate to a Fast Track subject
  • If teaching primary, it should be in or have content relating to a national curriculum subject.

A-Levels Either

  • 22 UCAS points in subjects excluding General Studies (using the old points tariff)
    Or
  • 18 UCAS points
  • Postgraduate degree in a discipline relevant to a Fast Track subject
  • Three years work experience in a graduate or professional role relevant to a Fast Track subject.

G.C.S.Es

  • Grade C or above at GCSE in English and maths (or equivalent)

Candidates intending to teach primary also need Grade C or above at GCSE in a science subject (or equivalent qualification) if they were born on or after 1st September 1979.

To join the Fast Track programme, existing teachers need all of the following:

  • A 2:1 honours degree, or
  • A 2:2 plus a postgraduate degree, eg MA MSc, MEd, PhD
  • Qualified Teacher Status
  • To be qualified to teach a subject offered under the Fast Track Programme
  • To be registered with the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE)
  • To be no higher than point 5 on the new Main Pay Scale

Qualified teachers from EU countries who already have QTS, need to register with the GTCE before they can join Fast Track. Qualified teachers from countries outside of the EU either need to apply via the new to teaching route or gain QTS by another route. All candidates for the Fast Track Programme should have the following personal qualities and attributes.

  • Analysis and problem solving - considers problems, identifies solutions and takes responsibility for making decisions
  • Conceptual thinking - thinks beyond immediate situation and develops new and improved ways of doing things
  • Delivering results - sets high standards and ensures they are achieved
  • Communicating effectively - both orally and written, captures the interest and enthusiasm of different audiences
  • Influencing Others - able to persuade and influence other people
  • Developing and enabling others - encourages other to perform to the best of their abilities and challenge under-performance
  • Teamworking and relationship-building - builds and contributes to highly effective working relationships, within and across teams
  • Confidence and resilience - demonstrates self-confidence, maintain energy and enthusiasm in challenging situations
  • Commitment to self-development - committed to learning, takes responsibility for professional development.

All Fast Track trainee teachers who are ordinarily resident in the UK or EU receive an additional £5000 Fast Track bursary. The first £3000 is paid at the start of their ITT year and the remaining £2000 when they take up their first Fast Track post.
