1985 Birkenhead Priory

Play Narration Stop Narration

Five artists explored the ruins of the mediaeval priory in Birkenhead and the gaunt cranes of the thriving shipyard.

A Liverpool potter, Gretel Baron, produced an impressive clay model from her detailed architectural drawings.

Muriel Fry exhibited interesting textile representations of the monks; mediaeval life.

Bill Davies, a stained glass artist, demonstrated his skills in a design depicting significant periods in the buildings history.

Peter Clarke was responsible for a striking and provocative development of Birkenhead from the Middle Ages to 1985: industrial discontent in a large painting/collage.

David Ives recorded the project on video. Pupils from six Wirral Schools worked with the artists and produced art that was exhibited alongside the artists work.
