Birds and Flight was the theme of the art project, celebrating the centenary of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The project featured sculptor Phil Bews and Kitemaker David Ives. Philip created a bird-like sculpture from a forked tree branch which was blown off a Turkey Oak in Arrowe Park. He had a temporary studio at the Wirral Country Park Visitor Centre and pupils went to see him at work.
The right leg of the sculpture was fixed to a set of wheels, a nod towards the railway station which once stood on the site of the Visitor Centre.
David Ives also worked with Wirral school children, mainly at Birkenhead Institute, and 50 pupils took their own colourful kites to fly at Thurstaston. Many of the designs were based on bird shapes.
Chrysalis Arts, a band, and theatre group led school children, artists, Unilever representatives and the mayor to unveil Survivor.
