1991 Hilbre Island

Play Narration Stop NarrationThe Hilbre Arts Project, jointly funded by Unilever and Wirral Task Force, enabled over 600 Wirral school children to visit the Hilbre Islands and produce 2D, Sculpture, photography and video work. The project provided a series of workshops by printmaker James Giddens and papermaker Steven Butler. John Bell and David Morgan were the Artists- in-Residence. They set up a temporary studio in the islands bunkhouse. Pupils were encouraged to work in the open air, where they could directly observe and record the landscape, wildlife and architecture of Hilbre.

The Studio in the Bunkhouse

Both artists produced large-scale paintings and drawings based on their experience of the islands. Their work was accompanied by photographs of Hilbre by Mike Walker, taken over a number of years using his hand-built camera.

An exhibition with pupils and artists work was held at the Williamson Gallery in the autumn of 1991.
