Unilever is a long-standing and committed supporter of the arts in the UK. Over the past ten years, we have donated more than £2 million to arts organisations large and small.
Alongside our high-profile commitments to national organisations such as The Tate Gallery, The Royal Academy of Arts and The National Theatre, most of our arts expenditure has gone to support the development of young talent, mirroring the key themes of the overall community programme.
Long term involvement with the National Musicians' Symphony Orchestra (formerly the YMSO), and funding for the young people's work placement at the Open Air Theatre in London's Regent's Park, are examples of this approach. Our 20-year programme of collecting contemporary art for Unilever House also supports young and up-and-coming artists.
Wirral Arts Projects
Nothing inspires young artists so much as contact with the leaders in their field. Since 1984, Unilever has been running an annual arts project for Wirral school children, which over the years has given thousands of students the opportunity to work with professional artists. The project's theme in 1998 was 'Art in the Open', with local artists taking groups of students out to explore the natural environment for materials to use in art design. The project ended with a public exhibition of the children's and artists' work at the Willianson Art Gallery, in Birkenhead.
The theme of the Art and Architecture was taken for the year 2000 with five artists working in twelve schools concluding with an exhibition at the Williamson Art Gallery.
