The objectives of an Artist-in-Residency Scheme are to introduce pupils and students to the concept of an artist as a professional working person, to experience the creative process and to have the opportunity to work and exhibit alongside an artist.
Working with an artist can enable teachers to learn new skills, refresh their own knowledge and understanding of the arts. It may also give the teacher an opportunity to stand back and observe their pupils in a new situation, developing confidence, thus gaining a new insight into their pupils achievement and potential.
A recent publication from policy to partnership published jointly by QCA and the Arts Council of England and distributed with the Art and Design Curriculum 2000, highlights the advantages of arts partnerships.
"Partnerships can offer pupils a much greater range and depth of arts experiences than can be provided by the school alone".
To develop arts partnerships, funding is essential and it is thanks to the Unilever Arts Project sponsorship over seventeen years that thousands of pupils from Wirral schools have been given the opportunity to work with professional artists.
The Williamson Art Gallery, where artists and pupils work has been exhibited, has provided the vital link between industry, school, teachers, pupils and the community.
