Not so long ago the Wirral Peninsula was almost all rural.
Small villages had grown up around manor houses and churches, but urban
development happened mainly in Birkenhead. Real growth took place only in
the second quarter of the nineteenth century.

Once Birkenhead started to urbanise, it did so at a
remarkable rate.
