Beginners Relational Database

Name: Terry Patterson
Position: ICT Adviser, Wirral LEA
Project: Beginners Relational Database
Folder: Behaviour Management

This project looks at a simple merits and sanctions database, modelled on the paper-based systems that many schools run as part of their discipline system. The database is pre-designed, but can be modified by amending data in the tables, and creating additional forms, queries and reports. It is aimed at the able Key Stage 3 student or the Key Stage 4 student who is targeting grade C or above. The database design could be re-developed in a different context – for instance, as personnel records in a company. The school-based focus gives it a context which is familiar to first time database builders. There are also important ethical issues arising from the collection of such data in electronic form. Teachers notes and pupil worksheets have been provided to support work through the database.

Since creating this database I have worked on normalising it and created a second, more efficient (but incomplete) solution. Repetition has been eliminated by referring to all merits/sanctions as Incidents. The second database has additional functionality and could be used as a comparison with the first to demonstrate normalisation, parameters and the use of subforms. No notes accompany this database.
