We have been approached by a school based in Hereford to construct an information system to enable the administration of an old pupils association.

This project is designed to be produced by a design team containing students from Y8 to Y13. The basic scenario is that students in Y8/9 design and produce the basic structure of the database. They also produce the basic queries and data entry facilities required in the specification. Students in Y10/11 create the user interface, set up the more advanced queries and produce the majority of the reports and charts. Students in Y12/13 set up archiving and backup facilities, hierarchical passwords and restricted user views. They are also in charge of project managing the implementation and the incorporation of any miscellaneous objectives that may arise.

In order to be a member of the association ex students have to pay a small annual subscription fee to the secretary of the club. The previous administrator of the association commissioned an ex student to produce a database system to aid in administration. This database took the form of a flat file database programmed in COBOL. Apart from the person who set up the system nobody else knows how to query or alter the database. The client wants a system that is user friendly and able to be used by the four users who regularly need to have access to the system.
