Relational Databases
Introduction:
Relational Databases is a challenging and exciting topic that can really grip the imagination of our students. The applications in industry and commerce are limitless. However, there is a general lack of electronic resources for the teaching of relational databases in Key Stage 4 and 5. Many teachers in this area of the curriculum are self-taught and struggling to find good exemplar materials that will lead pupils to produce quality work at GCSE/A level. A group of Wirral ICT teachers formed with the aim of creating support materials that would help both teachers and pupils when building a relational database for the first time. What has surprised us all is the range of approaches– we all have different styles and a different target group in mind. We hope that teachers will find something here that suits them and find the resources useful.
What resources are there?
Pupil worksheets that can be used independently, based upon an exam board GCSE case study, with worked answers and extension activities.
Fully functioning A-level projects with guidance notes for teachers.
An example of a beginner’s relational database, with simple queries and reports, plus teachers’ notes and pupil worksheets.
Notes on the normalisation process.
Examples of large databases with imported data (1000+ records).
Use of additional features such as switchboards and subforms – with teachers notes.
Gifted and Talented project for a lunchtime/after school club - group of mixed age yr 8 – yr 13.
- Security, archiving and backup for the most able of A level students.
