"Fractions"

What will this game will achieve?
This activity will help your child recognise simple fractions, halves and quarters.  It will also help them identify a half and a quarter of a whole number (16).

You will need:

                                                       
How do you play?

  • Look at the box. How many ways can you cover half of the box?
    e.g.
  • Encourage your child to count squares (16) and identify half (8)
    How many different ways now? - covering 8 squares

    Is this still half of the box covered?
  • Use the green triangles. How many ways can you cover a half of the box using these?

    How many triangles do you need to cover half (Half of 32 is 16)
  • Repeat the first three steps but try to cover a quater of the box
