Key Stage 1 Numeracy Homework
Reception Addition
"Hibernating Hedgehogs"

What will this game will achieve?
This will help your child to remember all pairs of numbers with a total of 10, e.g. 2 + 8 = 10, 3 + 7 = 10.

You will need:

How do you play?

  • Ask your child to count the hedgehogs
  • Explain they are going to hibernate for the winter. Cover them all with the 'leaves'
  • Ask your child how many hedgehogs are under the leaves. If he/she is unsure count the hedgehogs again. Repeat this until your child knows there are ten hedgehogs under the leaves
  • Now bring out one hedgehog out to search for food. Ask your child how many are left under the leaves
  • Repeat this activity bringing out a different number of hedgehogs each time

Too difficult? try using 3 or 5 hedgehogs

Too easy? Then ask your child to record as sums
   0 + 10 = 10 etc
OR ask your child to imagine there are now 11 hedgehogs and repeat the game

Alternativley: You can use 10 sweets underneath an upturned bowl
