Teaching Christianity through Sacred Texts

Christianity: Sacred Texts

Start by focusing on your learning objectives and outcomes drawn from the Expectations statements and P of S for RE.

(a) Special Books

(general work, starting from the children’s thoughts and ideas)

(b) The Bible

  • Different sectionseg
  • (stories, biography, poetry, predictions, law etc)

(c) Other Books e.g.

  • Hymn books

  • Prayer books

O.T LINKS WITH ISLAM & JUDAISM

  • Refer to Content guidance for Christianity in revised Wirral Agreed Syllabus for RE (stories and people etc.)
  • The Life of Jesus – stories, miracles, parables, events.
  • Invite a visitor in to explain the importance of the Bible to them.
  • Re-tell, rewrite, re-enact Bible stories (Literacy? role play? puppets? masks?)
  • Mary Jones story.

Extra Activity Ideas

  • Create a special place in the classroom for ‘Special Books’.
  • Work with pupils to produce Bible quizzes and / or board games.
  • Treat Christianity as a major world religion by referring to the spread of the gospel through disciples, missionaries, and the Bible Society, for example.
  • Create artwork through the decoration of psalms etc. in elaborate style of Lindisfarne gospels, scenes from stories as stained glass windows.

Teaching Judaism through Sacred Texts

  • Start by setting learning objectives and outcomes from Expectations statements and P of S.
  • Refer to Content Guidance in revised Wirral Agreed Syllabus for RE.
  • Start with the Bible, Old Testament.

LINK WITH CHRISTIANITY

  • Explore some of the stories / characters.

e.g. Moses / ‘Prince of Egypt’

Passover Link with artefacts

plus Re-enact, re-tell, describe, re-write for a younger audience; explore

issues in modern day contexts (eg slavery, exodus, refugees, etc);

role play, puppets, etc.

LINKS WITH LITERACY

  • Explore the Ten Commandments, codes of conduct, rules for living.
  • Creation stories – spiritual development; quality RE; discussion, / debate etc.
  • Also Focus on the ‘Special’ nature of the Torah scrolls in the synagogue and home. History of rituals, relevance and nature of these rituals in Jewish daily / weekly life.
