Safe Image Searching for Teachers & Pupils

RM Filter Policy - Information on how to Block and Unblock websites via the RM Filter.

Some of the information on this page has been taken from the former DfES, Superhighway Safety Website.

Images can be an excellent teaching tool. Effective use of images can make it easier to teach difficult concepts, can provide a stimulus for class discussion, or add visual appeal to a teacher's presentation or the individual work of pupils. The internet can provide a wonderful source of images, many of them copyright free, but finding appropriate images can be a challenge.

Many major search engines offer pre-set image searching from the homepage, often with safe searching options to filter results. However such searches and filters generally work on the basis of filename and description, and so can lead to misleading, unexpected or inappropriate results, sometimes of an adult nature. While teachers may find search engine image searches useful in lesson preparation, they should always be used with care and caution, and it is probably wise not to use them 'live' within a classroom setting.

An alternative to search engines is to use specialist web-based image collections - sites which deal specifically with key subjects such as the arts, animals, history or scientific concepts. These have the benefit of being closed collections, monitored and moderated by specialists within their field. Many now have an educational focus and provide copyright permissions specifically for educational use.

The Wirral Learning Grid has provided two safe search facilities:

The Picture Bank
A store of locally produced photographs and images provided by Wirral teachers and Educationalists. If you register with the Wirral Learning Grid site you can add your own images.

The Safe Search Engine
List of websites in categories reccommended by Wirral teachers for their content and relevance to teaching, learning or homework. Many contain image libraries.

This page, while not comprehensive, lists some web-based image collections and search services which might be useful for educational use.

Disclaimer
Please note, this listing is not comprehensive, and is only intended to give an overview of some of the resources available. Reference to specific image banks and websites in this document does not imply endorsement by the Wirral Learning Grid, nor does exclusion imply the reverse. Teachers are encouraged to check the relevance, child-friendliness and copyright restrictions of any web-based image banks before using them in the classroom. Further information on copyright is available in the document Intellectual property and copyright on this site.

KidsClick
KidsClick is a web search service for children, developed by librarians. The kid's image search page searches various image sites including Pics4Learning (as mentioned above).
