Dealing with Nerves on the Big Day

Before the test:

  • Be prepared! (we keep stressing it, but it's important!)
  • Learn your course notes thoroughly.
  • Try exercising - getting oxygen to the blood supply and brain is said to sharpen the mind.
  • Get a good night's sleep the night before the exam.

    Approach the exam with confidence:

  • View the exam as an opportunity to show how much you've studied and to receive a reward for all the studying you've done.
  • Make sure you have breakfast or lunch - don't go to the exam with an empty stomach.
  • Some foods can cause stress such as processed foods, artificial sweeteners, carbonated soft drinks, chocolate, eggs, fried foods, junk foods, pork, red meat, sugar, white flour products, chips and similar snack foods, foods containing preservatives or heavy spices. Try fresh fruit instead.
  • Take a small snack to help take you relax and forget about your nerves.
  • Allow yourself plenty of time to get to the exam - this will give you time to relax.
  • Don't try to do any last minute revision.

    During the test:

  • Read the questions and introduction carefully.
  • Workout how long you should spend on each question.
  • Change positions to help you relax - feel comfortable.
  • If you go blank, skip the question and go on to the next - it may trigger the answer in your mind.

    Don't panic:

  • Exams are not a race, when students start handing in their papers don't worry, you don't get a reward for being first to the finish.

If you are aware that you have a problem with exam nerves, discuss it with your teacher - they may be able to help! You could also discuss this with your doctor who would be able advise you about possible calming medicines.
