SUPPLY TEACHING IN WIRRAL

Wirral LEA do not directly operate a Supply Teacher Register for teachers, rather they work in partnership with an accredited Supply Agency to maintain a Wirral Supply List. The list is maintained and managed by an agency but supply teachers are paid directly by the school where they work, thus enabling teachers to be paid to scale, have their service recognised and be able to access Teachers Pension. Hays Education Personnel are currently working in partnership with the LEA and Wirral schools to deliver a supply service.

The LEA recognises the importance of Continuing Professional Development for all teachers in Wirral and supports the launch of the first accredited certificate of training for supply teachers by Hays Education Personnel. In partnership with the Learning and Skills Council Hays aim to deliver a programme fitted around the working day that does not conflict with times when people would wish to be working in schools. The Advanced Professional Certificate in Effective Supply is funded by the LSC and has no cost for teachers.

To register with Hays or for more details of the certificate programme please contact the local office:

As part of the Government's commitment to raising the effectiveness of supply teaching the DfES has commissioned a set of self-study materials for post induction Supply Teachers in order to support their Professional Development.

The materials consist of five books to enable independent study:

  • Getting Started
  • Core-Subjects in Primary Schools
  • Core-Subjects in Secondary Schools
  • Filling the Gaps
  • Classroom and Behaviour Management

Supply teachers are able to order these books directly from the DfES Ref: DfES/260/2002 or through a website developed to accompany the written materials, which is part of the teachernet website at www.teachernet.gov.uk.
